AuCaDo
Australian Cattle Dog Rescue
Available Michigan Pups

Last Pup-Date: November 5, 2009

Here are the current available listings of our Blue and Red Heelers Pups (what we consider pups, up to one year of age) who are looking for only forever homes. Take your time, look at their pictures and read their biographies. Remember, that if you cannot adopt, you can still sponsor any of our rescues until they are adopted. Another way to help, is to open your home to foster an Australian Cattle Dog. Giving our pups a chance to live in a home and learn basic manners, helps to prepare our rescues for their new homes. Fostering can take from a few weeks to a few months which helps the human as well as the canine.

AuCaDo Rescue does not adopt out "little" Australian Cattle Dog Puppies, due to the fact that Heeler pups need the time with their siblings or with older Australian Cattle Dogs to learn from. They learn much more from their own kind than from us. Puppies learn bite control, and social skills with the litter that will help make them a better pet. The minimum age we feel is appropriate to adopt out, if we have pups, is around 11-12 weeks. Sure, there are places to find 5 or 6 week old pups, and because they are weaned too early, they sometimes grow up with behavior problems. It is possible that behavior problems are the number one reason that our breed ends up homeless.

Our pups are spayed/neutered before they are adopted, this is what the adoption fee is for. We will NOT adopt out an unaltered pup, please don't ask us to! Australian Cattle Dog or herding Breed experience is required for adopting a young pup from AuCaDo Rescue. We need to be sure that puppy adopters understand the breed, and will not give up on the puppy when they exhibit typical "naughty" Australian Cattle Dog puppy behaviors.

Are You Ready for a Puppy? Before you consider adopting a puppy, please keep in mind that puppies are a lot of work! You'll need to thoroughly puppy proof your house, bring him/her to puppy obedience classes, and socialize him/her with all sorts of people, places, & animals. The more time and energy you 'put into' a pup, the happier you'll be as they get older. Don't forget that older Australian Cattle Dogs (or older pups) are just as trainable as a puppy and you know what you are getting with a minimum of surprises.

Socializing: We can't emphasize enough just how crucial it will be to socialize your pup from the moment you adopt him/her. You'll need to expose your puppy to the world they will be expected to live in as an adult. This means socializing him/her to all sorts of people, places, dogs, noises, sights, situations, etc. Ideally, your pup will need to get introduced to 100 people (who aren't part of your immediate family) and 100 other dogs before they turn 18 weeks old. The puppy will have met some people/dogs during his/her stay at AuCaDo Rescue but you'll still need to work on socializing your pup every day. If you want to adopt an older pup, fear not! You can still socialize your pup, it's never too late. Start right away with socializing and proceed just as you would with a younger pup.

Housetraining: Up until 4-5 months of age, a puppy's bladder cannot physically "hold it" for more than a few hours at a time. Generally a puppy can "hold it" 1 hour more than a pup's age in months. For instance, a 2-month-old puppy should be able to hold his/her bladder for 3 hours while a 5-month-old pup can hold it for 6 hours. Of course, some puppies can hold it longer while others cannot. If you are away from home for more than six hours a day, a puppy would not be a good choice (unless you have someone who could come in and let the puppy outside to potty while you are gone).

Young children: Young puppies are generally not good matches for children under the age of 6 because all puppies nip when they play and have very sharp teeth. Pups 4 months and older should be fine with the wee ones though, so long as you know in advance that pups at this age are still going through the oral stage and like to 'mouth' things, they will nip on hands and feet at first when playing, need a lot of attention, and are very bouncy.

Chewing: All puppies/dogs chew (often until they are a year or more old), so make sure you buy plenty of doggie toys, bones, kongs, and have a great sense of humor! If taking care of a puppy sounds overwhelming to you, consider adopting an older pooch — they are often much, much easier and just as sweet!

If you are interested in adopting one of our Australian Cattle Dog rescues, first please complete an adoption application. If you are out of the area, please send photos of your house/yard along with the application. We require the photos for out of state adoptions, which can be emailed to us. We also require a phone interview. If you do not hear back from us after submission of the application, please contact us. We think our rescues are all treasures and hope you will find your special friend with AuCaDo Australian Cattle Dog Rescue of Michigan. Check out the petfinder.com listings also for availability in your area or to send out listings to friends and family.

Sponsor Your Favorite Foster
Would you like to help with rescue but are unable to foster? Please consider sponsoring one of the precious foster dogs on our website.
Most of our rescue cattle dogs have vet bills in excess of their adoption fee. Constant health care along with monthly heart worm and flea preventatives are costly. We are looking for Rescue Angels to sponsor our fosters monthly by either sending a check for $25 each month or making payments via paypal. By choosing a special foster that you will help by covering their additional vetting that their adoption fee will not cover, you are allowing us to continue our rescue efforts and save more cattle dogs. Your sponsored cattle dog's foster mom will send you an email with updates and new photos, telling you how they are progressing and enjoying their new life.
If you would like to make your sponsorship payment by mail, please send a check for $25 to:
AuCaDo Rescue Mid-Michigan
3861 Twelve Mile Rd.
Remus, MI 49340
or click on the paypal button beside the special foster that you would like to sponsor.

THE MICHIGAN PUPS

"Grayson"
Meet Grayson in Remus, MI

Grayson10-31-09 Grayson comes into rescue on Halloween from a rural finder after trying to turn him into a shelter that could not accept him. Grayson appears to be 6-8 months old. Grayson is extremely thin and we think he had been on his own for a while to be in this condition. Grayson is scared as can be, he is shaking and drooling. He does not know what a leash is or a vehicle either. We can give him a couple of days, then start his training.

11-5-09 Grayson is trying his best here. Grayson is letting me pet him now, and I can pick him up to move him. We have put a collar on him, and we are starting the leash training. Grayson shakes his little body, but he is trying to learn. This is all I can ask for. There is a playful pup under all that fear, as he has play bowed to me a few times already.

Australian Cattle Dog or herding breed experience is required to apply / adopt our pups. Our adoption fee covers the spay / neuter, Rabies vaccine (if old enough), Distemper vaccine(s), Microchipping, HW testing (if older enough) with monthly preventative and starting of deworming. Please consider a rescue with the medical already done.

"Murphy"
Meet Murphy in Remus, MI

Simone10-23-09 Murphy arrives in rescue from a west Michigan shelter. Murphy is about 8 weeks old, by our best guess. If he is 8 weeks old, he will spend another 3-4 weeks here before he ready to go to his new home. In the meantime, a deposit can hold him until his release date.

Murphy has a docked tail. Seems to like the other pup, Mallory. And he thinks he is already a big dog. Smile.

11-5-09 Murphy's friend Mallory has been adopted, so Murphy gets to "play" with the BIG dogs now. Murphy likes to heal the big dogs. Murphy is very friendly and comes running when I call him. Murphy will be vetted on November 17th.

"Dixon"
Meet Dixon in Remus, MI

Dixon8-26-09 Dixon is an IL blue male heeler pup looking for a forever home. Dixon is an owner surrender who was given as a gift to apartment dwelling first time ACD owners. Also a fixed income limited the important vetting that he needs.

Dixon will require ACD owner experienced applicants, due to his lack of manners. Dixon will also require his full two weeks of cattle kid boot camp while here. Our first impression is that he is lacking manners and socialization.

9-20-09 Dixon was neutered and brought up to date on vaccines last week. Dixon has been making friends here, and is learning something about proper manners from the older pack members. Dixon is ready to meet ACD experienced adopters.

PENDING ADOPTIONS!
The pending adoptions have either gone to their new homes for a 2 week trial or have a deposit to hold the dog until they are ready to pick them up.

"Sophie"
Adoption Pending!

Thank you, Chip, for 1 month Sponsor

Sophie9-29-09 Sophie is a young blue heeler female around 5 to 6 months old, as she has her big girl teeth. Sophie has a docked tail, and fine feminine features. Sophie needs some confidence building, as she is very submissive and shows her belly constantly. Sophie was spayed on 9-30-09 and may be ready after 10-13-09.

Sophie is learning social skills, as she was afraid of the other dogs here, even the little puppy. It took some time, but she is much better, and is even playing with some of the adults. We have learned that Sophie rolls over on his back in order to avoid having to do things. We keep a slip lead on her and keep her head up, so she is not able to get out of doing things. Nice try, Sophie, but we already know that trick. HA!

"Caroline" aka "Betsy"
Adoption Pending!

Thank you, Massillon Animal Hospital,
for Sponsoring Caroline

CarolineCaroline aka Betsy has a pending adoption.

We are guessing Caroline to be be under 1 year old. She is HW negative, and was vetted on 9-28-029. She weighs 26 pounds and is sweet natured. Lots of tail wags upon meeting her. Caroline is set to transport up to Michigan on Sunday, October 4th.

Update 10-5-09 Caroline attended our Meet and Greet yesterday, where she interacted with children and adults. Looking at her teeth, we are guessing she may be as young as 8 or 9 months old. The canine teeth are not all the way in.

"Mallory"
Adoption Pending!

Mallory10-8-09 Mallory has a deposit to hold her until her spay and recuperation is done.

9-25-09 Mallory comes into rescue from a West Michigan shelter. We are guessing her age about 8-10 weeks. She will be spayed and microchipped on October 13th.

The most recent adoptions are listed here. Remember that you are saving two (or more) ACD's, the one you have adopted and the dog that takes their place here in rescue. Thank you for opening your home to a RESCUED Australian Cattle Dog.

"Simone"
Adopted!

Simone10-7-09 Simone is a young female heeler with great big ears that she has not grown into yet. She has jumping ability where she jumps up and looks you straight in the eye. We will work on that little (too enthusiastic) behavior.

Simone is a very friendly girl with people, and also has good dog social skills. Simone seems to know what a crate is, and keeps hers clean overnight. We are guessing her at about 6 months old. She will be vetted on October 13th, and ready for release after October 21st. Simone welcomes visitors to meet her.
