AuCaDo
Australian Cattle Dog Rescue
Available Michigan Pups

Here are the current available listings of our Blue and Red Heeler Pups (what we consider pups, up to one year of age) who are looking for only forever homes. Take your time, look at their pictures and read their biographies. Remember, that if you cannot adopt, you can still sponsor any of our rescues until they are adopted. Another way to help, is to open your home to foster an Australian Cattle Dog. Giving our pups a chance to live in a home and learn basic manners, helps to prepare our rescues for their new homes. Fostering can take from a few weeks to a few months which helps the human as well as the canine.

AuCaDo Rescue does not adopt out "little" Australian Cattle Dog Puppies, due to the fact that Heeler pups need the time with their siblings or with older Australian Cattle Dogs to learn from. They learn much more from their own kind than from us. Puppies learn bite control, and social skills with the litter that will help make them a better pet. The minimum age we feel is appropriate to adopt out, if we have pups, is around 11-12 weeks. Sure, there are places to find 5 or 6 week old pups. Did you know, that the law, is for pups to stay until they are 8 weeks old? Sometimes, because they are weaned too early, they grow up with behavior problems. It is quite possible that behavior problems are the number one reason that our breed ends up homeless.

Our pups are spayed/neutered before they are adopted, this is what the adoption fee is for. We will NOT adopt out an unaltered pup, please don't ask us to! Australian Cattle Dog or herding Breed experience is required for adopting a young pup from AuCaDo Rescue. We need to be sure that puppy adopters understand the breed, and will not give up on the puppy when they exhibit typical "naughty" Australian Cattle Dog puppy behaviors.

Are You Ready for a Puppy? Before you consider adopting a puppy, please keep in mind that puppies are a lot of work! You'll need to thoroughly puppy proof your house, bring him/her to puppy obedience classes, and socialize him/her with all sorts of people, places, & animals. The more time and energy you 'put into' a pup, the happier you'll be as they get older. Don't forget that older Australian Cattle Dogs (or older pups) are just as trainable as a puppy and you know what you are getting with a minimum of surprises.

Socializing: We can't emphasize enough just how crucial it will be to socialize your pup from the moment you adopt him/her. You'll need to expose your puppy to the world they will be expected to live in as an adult. This means socializing him/her to all sorts of people, places, dogs, noises, sights, situations, etc. Ideally, your pup will need to get introduced to 100 people (who aren't part of your immediate family) and 100 other dogs before they turn 18 weeks old. The puppy will have met some people/dogs during his/her stay at AuCaDo Rescue but you'll still need to work on socializing your pup every day. If you want to adopt an older pup, fear not! You can still socialize your pup, it's never too late. Start right away with socializing and proceed just as you would with a younger pup.

Housetraining: Up until 4-5 months of age, a puppy's bladder cannot physically "hold it" for more than a few hours at a time. Generally a puppy can "hold it" 1 hour more than a pup's age in months. For instance, a 2-month-old puppy should be able to hold his/her bladder for 3 hours while a 5-month-old pup can hold it for 6 hours. Of course, some puppies can hold it longer while others cannot. If you are away from home for more than six hours a day, a puppy would not be a good choice (unless you have someone who could come in and let the puppy outside to potty while you are gone).

Young children: Young puppies are generally not good matches for children under the age of 6 because all puppies nip when they play and have very sharp teeth. Pups 4 months and older should be fine with the wee ones though, so long as you know in advance that pups at this age are still going through the oral stage and like to 'mouth' things, they will nip on hands and feet at first when playing, need a lot of attention, and are very bouncy.

Chewing: All puppies/dogs chew (often until they are a year or more old), so make sure you buy plenty of doggie toys, bones, kongs, and have a great sense of humor! If taking care of a puppy sounds overwhelming to you, consider adopting an older pooch — they are often much, much easier and just as sweet!

Adopting a Pup vs Young Adult: We often hear adopters say "I only want a puppy, because the older dogs are damaged". I beg to differ. The older pups and young adults are going to give you an honest read into their personality. A puppy can be a roll of the dice, as they can turn out much differently than you might think. A puppy may even surprise you on how they look as they grow up, and not meet your expectations. All dogs, young and old, need daily training and any dog can learn. Don't sell the older dogs short, as they are very smart, which is most likely what you like about the breed. If you are interested in adopting one of our Australian Cattle Dog rescues, first please complete an adoption application. If you are out of the area, please send photos of your house/yard along with the application. We require the photos for out of state adoptions, which can be emailed to us. We also require a phone interview. If you do not hear back from us after submission of the application, please contact us. We think our rescues are all treasures and hope you will find your special friend with AuCaDo Australian Cattle Dog Rescue of Michigan. Check out the petfinder.com listings also for availability in your area or to send out listings to friends and family.

Sponsor Your Favorite Foster
Would you like to help with rescue but are unable to foster? Please consider sponsoring one of the precious foster dogs on our website.
Most of our rescue cattle dogs have vet bills in excess of their adoption fee. Constant health care along with monthly heart worm and flea preventatives are costly. We are looking for Rescue Angels to sponsor our fosters monthly by either sending a check for $25 each month or making payments via paypal. By choosing a special foster that you will help by covering their additional vetting that their adoption fee will not cover, you are allowing us to continue our rescue efforts and save more cattle dogs. Your sponsored cattle dog's foster mom will send you an email with updates and new photos, telling you how they are progressing and enjoying their new life.
If you would like to make your sponsorship payment by mail, please send a check for $25 to:
AuCaDo Rescue Mid-Michigan
3861 Twelve Mile Rd.
Remus, MI 49340
or click on the paypal button beside the special foster that you would like to sponsor.

Ludwig
4-3-13 Ludwig comes into rescue after a 7 day stray hold in a MI shelter. Ludwig looks to be around 12 weeks old, so he will have a minimum 4 week stay in rescue. Ludwig looks to be a high percentage ACD mix. His ears go up, his ears go down, yet it is still the first day here. He has a large body spot on his left side and does have an ACD long tail. His first puppy vaccination has been given, but he will get neutered and the rest of the vetting around the first of May. He is doing well with my husband and I with learning how to walk on leash. He likes his play group of Geppetto and Brolan.

Thank You, Jennifer, For Sponsoring Iaan

Iaan
3-8-13 We are moving Iaan's bio back up to available status, and returning his deposit. The family would like more time to work Roscoe into the family, and are afraid that having two youngsters together at this time might not be the best decision. They are not giving up on him, and I want to give them time to work things through without the pressure of the deposit in the background.

3-1-13 Iaan has a deposit to hold until Roscoe P gets acclimated to his new home. At the right time, Iaan will be joining Roscoe P.

12-20-12 Iaan is getting his big boy teeth now, so will age him at 4.5 to 5 months of age. Iaan is going to be a big adult, when he grows into his big feet.

12-8-12 Iaan continues to improve, and seems to be in a growth spurt, as he is eating everything in sight. He still has his baby teeth, so we are still aging him around the 4 month mark, until he loses them. He keeps a clean crate, and his submissive pee times are every once in a while, instead of every day.

11-3-12 Iaan comes into rescue as an owner surrender, due to living outside, as he was not house trained. First order of business, is the crate training. The shelter had his vetting done, except for microchip, so we adopted him in order to bring him here. Our goal is to place him into a home where he will not be given up on and continue crate training.

11-17-12 Iaan moves up in seniority, yet he is still struggling with submissive pee. I feel that someone may have been "heavy handed" with him, as he feels like he is always in trouble.

ACD puppy experience will be required for applying for young Iaan.

Thank You, Leelyn, For Sponsoring Donatello

Donatello
2-25-13 Donatello has a pending adoption.

2-10-13 Donatello comes into rescue as an owner surrender. Owners had purchased 2 pups from an Amish farm because they were "cute". The owner said that there was no place in the suburbs for the pup to be outside, so they kept him inside. They must have carried him everywhere, because he was not taught about a leash. Notice, his leash and collar are his friends. He was taken to the shelter the day before, but the shelter would not take him. He looks to be about 4 months old. He was very scared on transport, but seems to like it here, and likes Sylvie. Maybe Sylvie reminds him of the other pup, who was taken away back in December. Sylvie is also teaching him how to lead, she is too smart. ACD experience will be required for adoption.

Geppetto
4-13-13 Geppetto nka Maverick has a pending adoption.

2-24-13 Geppetto was pulled from an OH shelter a week ago, and was in temporary foster care while awaiting transport to MI. Geppetto appears to be under 5 months old, since he still has his baby teeth. He seems to be on the smaller side, and seems to have a Terrier shaped head, but has the ACD coloring. So far, we are seeing a bold boy and he is doing well with his play group of youngsters and one adult ACD.

We have an appointment on March 6th for his vetting.

Thank You, Ben, For Sponsoring Brolan

Brolan
4-6-13 Brolan nka Basil has a pending adoption.

3-14-13 Brolan has had 3 vet check ups in the 2 weeks that he has been here. Our vet has given the okay to take him off of the "possible" special needs listing. Listening to his heart there was no detection of a murmur, but he was also being held on to, as opposed to being under anesthetic as he may have been at the shelter.

Also, back when Brolan was first here, he started to limp not only on his hind leg, but on a front leg. Our vet looked at the x-rays taken to rule out hip dysplasia, and did not see abnormal hips. So, our vet wondered about Lymes Disease. I contacted the shelter for additional information, and have not heard a reply. So when we treated him for Lymes, his limping symptoms disappeared. Also, we have changed him to a large breed puppy formula, to help slow down the leg growth. This boy is a chunk, already weighing in at 19 pounds today. Our vet has given him the okay to be considered for a new home provided that his potential adopter continues medication treatment, he gets proper exercise with daily walks, continues on good food and get sunshine daily for Vitamin D.

2-28-13 Brolan is a 12 week old male heeler who was surrendered due to "nipping at the children" ages 4-11. What I see is a very friendly and submissive pup who is always under my feet. Even our transporter had the pup under his feet and instead of stepping on him with full weight he went down on the ice to save him.

The shelter vet report is as follows: Brolan has been diagnosed with a stage 1 heart murmur that he may or may not outgrow. Secondly, he has been diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia that he may or may not outgrow. We have sent his x-ray to our vet, and we will get him in there after some settle in time.

Brolan will be here for a minimum of 4 weeks to make sure he is doing well with his treatment(s).

Apache
3-20-13 Apache has a pending adoption until a meet and greet in April, from out of state.

3-9-13 Apache comes into rescue from an IN shelter where she was "dropped" off after hours. She looks to be young, and her paperwork says 8 to 10 months. We will let our vet give us an opinion on her age when her vetting is done. She is a friendly girl and does have a docked tail.

Thank You, Teresa-Ivy, For Sponsoring Roscoe P

Roscoe P
3-1-13 Roscoe P has a pending adoption.

12-19-12 Roscoe moves on the website to this pups page. At his vetting appointment, the vet said that he is not over a year old, and more like about 8-10 months.

12-17-12 Roscoe P comes into rescue from a Northern MI shelter where he was "live trapped" after 2 weeks of running around not wanting to be caught. Silly boy, then he rolled belly up in the trap and peed on himself. He really is friendly, but goes over board with jumping up and mouthing. No manners with this one.

His paperwork guessing him to be about a year old, youngish. He will be neutered and vaccinated and chipped on 12-19-12.

Sylvie
2-24-13 Sylvie had a meet and greet, and is on her way to IL.

1-15-13 Sylvie comes into rescue after careful consideration, as her caretaker wanted the best future life for her. (Thank You Jenny) She was born in March of 2012 and spayed in January 2013. Sylvie is a small female who will be a small as an adult. We have a few more things to do vetting wise, so that she has what we require before going to a new home. She has had a big day, so we are giving her time to learn about us. She is with a female play pack, and doing well. Her pack includes Tomika, Annivee and Bella which is a good start. She has mentor in Tomika and playmates in the other young females.
